What is greatness? When most people hear the word “greatness” they think of people like Mother Teresa, Martin Luther, Peter Jackson, Bethany Hamilton, or Aron Ralston.
All of these people achieved some form of greatness. Be sure to click each name to learn about some of the things they achieved. There are things from just being a good person all the way to amputating a person’s own arm.
Heather & I have always tried to surround ourselves with people who are better, smarter, healthier, and wealthier than us. Why in the world do we try to do that? Well, I can’t remember who or what we heard it from, but basically where you are in 5 to 10 years will depend on the people you associate with and the books you read!
We want to have a happy family (when we decide we’re gonna have kids), so we hang with friends who have super happy families. We want to be healthy so we hang with people who just have to think about losing weight and it happens;) We want to be smart with our mula, so we hang with people who have money and are smart with it.
You get the point! We just want to surround ourselves with people who are successful. We want to learn from people who are willing to help us avoid mistakes that they have already made.
So that brings us back to our question. “What does it mean to achieve Greatness?”
I think Ray Lewis said it best while speaking with a football team recently.
“Greatness is a lot of small things done well.”
We want to master our craft by doing the small things well. We want our marriage to be great so we try our hardest by simply doing the small things well.
Peter Jackson is a perfect example of doing the small things well. Do you think he just woke up and someone said “Hey Peter, come direct this Lord of the Rings movie!” No, he started by doing all of the little things well. Now he has pretty much any resource at his fingertips to bring a movie to the big screen.
We just want to encourage you! Instead of saying to yourself, “Man, I wish I was at this point in my life,” just handle what you’re doing now, and do it well!
